Bajram: visits, baklava and bajramluk

Bajramska sofra sa baklavom, tufahijama i bakrenom džezvom

Ramazanski bajram follows the month of fasting, and Kurban bajram comes about two months later. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sandžak, Kosovo and North Macedonia these are the days when the family gathers and the doors are open to the neighbours.

How is it celebrated?

  • The morning starts with the Eid prayer at the mosque, followed by visits, first to the eldest.
  • Children visit their relatives and receive bajramluk, a small gift or some money.
  • The festive table needs baklava, tufahija and coffee.
  • The greeting is Bajram šerif mubarek olsun.

Bajram is a feast of forgiveness: old quarrels are left behind, and neighbours get a plate of sweets.
