Easter: painted eggs and egg tapping

Korpa sa farbanim jajima i deca koja tucaju jaja

Catholics and the Orthodox often celebrate Easter on different Sundays, because they calculate it with different calendars. Sometimes the dates coincide, and the whole Balkans celebrate on the same day.

How is it celebrated?

  • Eggs are dyed on Good Friday or Holy Saturday, traditionally with onion skins and a leaf under a stocking for the pattern.
  • In many Serbian homes the first dyed egg is kept for a whole year to protect the house.
  • At the table people tap eggs against each other: whoever's egg stays whole wins.
  • The Orthodox greeting is Hristos vaskrse, answered with Vaistinu vaskrse. Catholics say Sretan Uskrs.

For children only one thing matters: having the strongest egg in the whole family.
